By TERI FIGUEROA – North County Times – Sunday, October 16, 2011 10:00 p.m. Kathy Cannon has represented one man accused of killing and dismembering his mother and another man accused of shooting children playing at recess at Carlsbad’s Kelly Elementary School. She also defended a documented gang member who gunned down a rookie Oceanside cop during a traffic stop. Next month, after 23 years defending poor people accused of heinous crimes, Cannon is leaving her job as an attorney with the San Diego County Office of the Public Defender. (Cannon also spent a decade doing the same sort of work in Los Angeles County.) Established in 1988, the public defender’s office is essentially one of the largest law firms in the region and represents indigent clients, which is nine out of every 10 criminal defendants in San Diego County.
