Monterey County Board of Supervisors Approves ‘painful’ cuts

Special anti-gang and narcotics enforcement units are in jeopardy. Young offenders may soon have fewer options other than Juvenile Hall, which is likely to shrink. The budget, slated for final adoption June 21, is designed to close a $30 million shortfall and includes the elimination of more than 320 positions, with 182 county workers receiving a pink slip Thursday. Supervisor Jane Parker said this year’s spending cuts are especially worrisome because of the services, programs and people they will affect most. Public safety –  including the Sheriff’s Office, Probation Department, Public Defender’s Office and Child Support Services –  are absorbing the largest cutbacks, as are a range of health and social services programs, including community health providers.
