June 23, 2011 – WestSideConnect.com NEWMAN – Local resident Tim Bazar is at the head of a county department which draws little attention and to which most probably give little thought – until they are in need of the services it provides. Bazar is the county’s public defender, overseeing a 38-member staff which provides legal representation to those accused of crimes who are unable to afford a private attorney. While it may not always be afforded the publicity afforded the prosecution side of the criminal justice process – which is led by an elected district attorney – the public defender’s office plays a critical role in the system by providing legal counsel to the accused. For the most part, Bazar said, the attorneys in his office are simply representing real people with real problems, and that they work diligently to ensure that their clients are provided a sound defense. “The attorneys in our office and I recognize that everyone has the right to counsel in our system,” he remarked. “Most people who we represent are cooperative, and they appreciate our services. They need help, and we are the only ones who can help them.” [Full Story (with photo): http://www.westsideconnect.com/2011/06/23/newman-resident-oversees-stanislaus-county-public-defender%E2%80%99s-office/ ]
