On March 7, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to accept for review the case of Maikhio v. California , No. 11-527, 2011 WL 5098765 (2011). Lawyers for Mr. Maikhio had asked the Supreme Court to address whether the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution – which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures of people and property – restricts California Fish & Game wardens from conducting warrantless searches of vehicles on public roads without reasonable suspicion of a crime.
