United States DOJ Sues LA County Sheriff Over CCW Licensing Delays

The long-standing battle for CCW rights in California just gained a powerful new ally: the Trump Administration. Today, US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, alleging that the Department’s concealed carry licensing (CCW) process violates the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. Read the full complaint here.

“For years, my firm and our clients have been fighting county-by-county across California to force compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision in Bruen,” said C.D. “Chuck” Michel, President and General Counsel of the California Rifle & Pistol Association and Founding Partner of Michel & Associates, P.C. “Los Angeles County is one of the worst offenders, dragging its feet with delays, imposing excessive fees, and inventing new requirements to keep lawful citizens from exercising their right to carry. We are encouraged that the Trump Administration recognizes these abuses for what they are—unconstitutional barriers to the Second Amendment.”

The DOJ’s lawsuit builds on work already advanced through litigation spearheaded by Michel & Associates and CRPA, Gun Owners of America, Gun Owners of California, and the Second Amendment Foundation. Earlier this year, the DOJ announced an investigation into Los Angeles County’s CCW patterns and practices, citing our lawsuit and the evidence we uncovered. That investigation provided the foundation for today’s federal filing.

Our case has already achieved meaningful victories, including a partial preliminary injunction that struck down LA County’s extreme wait times—which stretched beyond 18 months—and required California to create a process for out-of-state residents to apply for CCW permits. That process began earlier this year, in April.

Michel & Associates and our partners will continue to support the DOJ’s case while pressing forward with CRPA’s “CCW Reckoning Project” until every jurisdiction in California complies with Bruen.
