Michel & Associates, P.C. is pleased to announce that C.D. “Chuck” Michel has once again been recognized by the Daily Journal as one of California’s Top 100 Lawyers for 2026.
Michel also received the Top 100 recognition in 2024 and 2025, making this his third consecutive selection.
Michel is President of Michel & Associates, P.C., the California Rifle & Pistol Association, and the Second Amendment Law Center. He has litigated firearms-regulation and Second Amendment cases for more than three decades during a period of profound change in constitutional law.
In District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), Michel served as counsel on an amicus brief filed on behalf of 29 elected district attorneys and other law-enforcement officials supporting recognition of the Second Amendment as protecting an individual right to keep and bear arms.
Since Heller, Michel and organizations he represents have participated through litigation and amicus briefing in major Second Amendment cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and federal appellate courts, including McDonald v. City of Chicago, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, United States v. Rahimi, Wolford v. Lopez, United States v. Hemani, and Viramontes v. Cook County.
The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Bruen rejected conventional interest balancing in Second Amendment cases and directed courts to evaluate modern firearm restrictions by reference to the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. Since then, courts have continued to define how that standard applies to firearm prohibitions, public-carry restrictions, commonly owned firearms, ammunition magazines, and other forms of firearm regulation.
Michel’s current litigation includes challenges to California laws regulating ammunition purchases, handgun sales, ammunition magazines, and licensed public carry. These cases are part of the continuing effort to determine how the Supreme Court’s developing Second Amendment doctrine applies in one of the nation’s most heavily regulated jurisdictions.
Michel’s legal practice extends beyond firearms and constitutional litigation. Over the course of his career, he has handled complex civil and criminal litigation, environmental and land-use matters, public-law and regulatory disputes, and business and nonprofit matters.
Michel’s focus remains on ensuring that lower courts and government officials apply the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment decisions as written.
“California politicians and some judges have resisted the Supreme Court’s Second Amendment decisions. Those rulings restored meaningful constitutional protection to the right to keep and bear arms. Our job is to make sure those decisions are faithfully applied.”
As Second Amendment jurisprudence continues to develop, Michel remains actively involved in litigation affecting firearm owners, businesses, civil-rights organizations, and constitutional law in California and throughout the country.
The firm congratulates Michel on his third consecutive selection to the Daily Journal’s Top 100 Lawyers and thanks the clients, colleagues, organizations, and attorneys who have worked with the firm throughout these matters.
