Michel & Associates, P.C. is proud to celebrate a decisive and complete victory in Junior Shooting Sports Magazines, Inc. v. Bonta—a landmark challenge to California’s unconstitutional attempt to ban lawful communications about firearms, firearm-related products, and events allegedly “targeting minors.”
Gavin Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 2571 in an effort that threatened junior shooting sports and sought to cut off the next generation of lawful firearm owners from access to information, training, and participation.
This complete victory reflects the persistence of our legal team and our clients. We took this fight through the Ninth Circuit not once, but twice—and prevailed both times.
California attempted to sideline both the First and Second Amendments. That effort has now been fully rejected. A permanent injunction issued by the United States District Court for the Central District of California permanently bars enforcement of any portion of AB 2571, ensuring that junior shooting sports organizations may lawfully advertise, organize matches, and continue outreach efforts.
Despite recent media suggestions to the contrary, this victory was secured through the immediate and sustained legal action by CRPA and its strategic partners. CRPA and the other plaintiffs in this case filed suit the moment AB 2571 became law and remained committed through every stage of litigation, even while the legislature was allowed time to revise the statute. While other lawsuits followed, this case produced the controlling decision that delivered final and complete relief.
This judgment sends a clear constitutional message: California cannot silence lawful speech simply because it disfavors the subject matter.
Victories like this require years of litigation, unwavering commitment, and the continued support of members, donors, and clients who refuse to surrender constitutional rights. We thank CRPA, Junior Sports Magazine Inc., Raymond Brown, California Youth Shooting Sports Association, Inc., Redlands California Youth Clay Shooting Sports, Inc., The CRPA Foundation, Gun Owners of California, Inc., and the Second Amendment Foundation for their commitment.
